    The Thousand Character Classic
You can go here to read all the notes about each line, but I thought it'd be nice to have the whole thing all in one place:

The sky was black and earth yellow; space and time vast, limitless.
Sun high or low, moon full or parsed; with stars and lodges spread in place.
Cold arrives then heat once more; Autumn's harvest, Winter's store.

A sword is styled "Excalibur"; a pearl, the "Gleam of Night".
Dearest fruit are pears and apples; fine crops mustard, ginger.
Sea is saline, streams sublime; fish school below, birds flock on high.
Dragon Master, Fire King; Bird Official, Lord of Men.

Exalted go only the wise and good; control desire, achieve sagehood.
Virtue built, good name made; figure upright, bearing straight.
The empty valleys broadly resonate; in hollow halls wisely officiate.
Calamity's caused by evil stored; blessings result as good's reward.
A foot of jade is no treasure; an inch of time is to fight for.
Nourish your father and serve your king; known as reverence and respect.
Devoted to parents with all your strength; loyal to throne with your very life.
Like facing the deep, like treading thin ice; early to rise, warm and cool.
Like an orchid is this fragrance; like fresh pines, abundant, dense.
The river flows at endless pace; in deepest pool behold the face.
Stand solemly and thoughtfully; speak with calm and dignity.

Alive, under a sweet pear tree; gone, in song of eulogy.
Music distinct by social rank, rites according to prestige.
The higher is pleasing, the lower harmonious; the husband leads and the wife accompanies.

    Strategic voting = bad
In response to friends and family saying "Not voting for McCain is voting for Obama" or "I want to vote for Nader, but Obama has a better chance of winning, so he'll get my vote": in my opinion, that is the kind of thinking that is largely responsible for the state we're in today where MOST of the people I ask want to vote for someone less popular, but they ALL don't bother because they fear their first choice can't win.

Listen, fear of losing should NOT be a driving force of one's vote; it shouldn't even enter into it. IF I shouldn't vote for someone, it's because he's a bad choice, a bad person with a bad character or bad ideas, not because they're unpopular. Who becomes the next president is a popularity contest. Who gets my vote is not. The same should go for every voter.

I support candidates whom I want to win; I talk favorably about some candidates because I want to see their policies replace the bad ones in place today. I don't vote for them because I want them to win. I vote for them because I believe in them. If more people voted for what they believed in and not just what they think has a better chance of winning, then more good stuff would win.

When you vote for the lesser of two evils, you're still just getting more evil.

Spam made me think of this joke.
An adjective walks into the Grammar Employment Office and says to the hiring agent, "I want to be a superlative."
The agent replies "Why do you think you deserve the job?"
    "Because I'm the best!"
The agent replies, "Yeah, OK, look, I don't think you're really qualified."

    Bears repeating
    Regarding this:

Driving in USA, I already use KM instead of MI.
The conversion is easy if you know one simple fact:
    5/8 or 8/5

That is, 5 miles is about 8 kilometers. It's not exact and you shouldn't use this fact if you're plotting a missile trajectory, but it is sufficient if you're driving with the speedometer set to KM and are wondering if you're driving at a legal speed.
    So if you're driving at 80 km/h, it's 50 mph.
    88km/h =~ 55mph.
    32 (8*4) km/h =~ (5*4) 20 mph
    72 (8*9) km/h =~ (5*9) 45 mph
    See?

Just relearn your multiplication table for the factor of 8, and you're ready to join the rest of the base 10 world.

Last nite I dreamed I was stuck looking at a Wikipedia page about a movie that was stuck encoding at 98%.

(This is right after I went to bed having just watched a crappily encoded Doom where the last 3 of 4 clips had the sound 5 seconds out of sync late. Get what you pay for. Usually.)

    Where am I?
Yesterday went to Steven's graduation. We're all so proud of him.

Today I begin house sitting for him for a week while he and his wife go to Disney World. His dogs are very cute. I mean, I knew before they were cute, but very yappy. Now when it's nothing but two cute little puppies all day with their real master gone and not much to yap about but each other and me, they're quickly warming up to me and all the extreme cuteness is overpowering. She is independent but smaller in size and sound, less trusting. He is overly submissive & I wish he'd be more playful (like Schotsie) and less mischievous. She is better about not being bad behind my back- she'll be bad right in front of me and not look ashamed, just curious. ("Was that bad? Why?") He'll be ashamed even when he hasn't done anything, as if whenever I say anything or just look at him, it is to chastise him- it' funny but pathetic. It is good to see her not cower every time I walk by. He is quiet. It's weird watching them interact with each other.

    Tomorrow I go run errands.

Apparently both dogs are afraid of the dark. There are bears and coyotes out here, but we're safe behind the fence. Haven't noticed any difference living off well water. It's eerily quiet here. I feel healthy but fried, like there are things I am forgetting, but not missing. Calmly disjointed.

Dinner consisting of salty potato chips and ramen noodles = not a good idea
Tuesday nite (technically Wednesday morning) I got a call from Jim around 2am- his car had broken down and he needed a jumpstart. So I drove out there and gave him a charge. Before the charge, the engine wouldnt turn at all. After the charge, the engine would turn but wouldnt start. We spent the next two hours trying to figure out why before giving up and I went home to get a couple hours sleep while he waited for a tow truck to become available to tow him to the nearest dealership. Turns out his fuel pump had died. SO I went in to work yesterday around 1(after going to the chiropractor).

Then when I went to bed last nite at a reasonable hour, I forgot to turn my alarm back on so TODAY I came in to work late again, this time with less of an excuse. BUT, I finally got this report script I'm writing to work, so the day is looking up.

    Irrational and unpredictable, my foot!
    This is interesting:

In the first 4 million digits of pi, there are no more than six consecutive 2s, 4s, 6s and 8s; and no more than seven consecutive 3s, 5s, 7s, and 9s.

However the pattern breaks down (or at least does a weird reversal) for the other single-digit even and odd integers.

Sorry I havent been posting lately. I've been busy and I fear that I won't be able to recall a lot of the details, but I should be more social later in the year.

    Merry Christmas!
    my halloween costume this year

I haven't updated my LJ lately. Havent even looked at it or anyone else's. Been out of the world for a while. Still am. Not much been going on or getting done outside work. Kinda depressing. I don't like the trends lately. Something should change soon. Thanks to majority of friends who've been patient with my absence and/or good enough to not bother me with more complications.

This weekend, saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Uncle Leon. (Whoever said the songs aren't memorable was right.) Before that, picking up laundry and gutter and lawn work. Prior, karaoke and dinner grilled with lil bro and stepdad.

Been working on "Eve", another play, lights and music. I'll be glad when it's over but it's been fun learning the anti-intuitive setup: hold down the button for quick light change, tap it for slow change.:-\

    Anyways, back to work.

Think you've seen the month's stupidest petty religious nut story? Think again. The funniest/saddest part about this is Borger King ("your way is irrelevant") went along with this.
You know, it occurred to me recently that power line poles look an awful lot like crosses. I find that offensive- can we take these down? Also, east of San Antonio, near the junction of I-10 and I-35 there's a group of intersections of highways thats look a little too much like a Hebrew star. We should reconstruct those so it's not so nearly coincidental. Meh!

Sorting, answering phones, paperwork, transportation, filing, medical labor for those with the shkills.

    Noooo!
Been seeing "NO" alot in my friends' LJ entries lately, wondering if they meant MO for Missouri (cuz that seems more like the name befitting a state that's up to their asses in flooding and disaster and whatnot). Then it occurred to me they weren't all typo-prone, it's just me and me being a retarded, geographical-moron.

NO stands for New Orleans (in Lousiana, which is abbreviated LA, like Los Angelos). It's also the sound lots of folks have been making seeing gas prices since yesterday afternoon. Not so much me and sketch and other such alternatively fuels folks, but HEY it still really sux for us too. Keeping things in perspective however, please remember that if you didn't lose your house and possessions (and maybe a few friends and family) to a big fucking natural disaster recently, you don't really have that much room to complain, relatively speaking.

Sometime around 6pm, I think (you do the research, I'm lazy and busy), Govenor Purdue declared a state of emergency and froze all gas prices. This means prices are no more allowed to skyrocket in response to the demands of the frenzy-and-panic driven market (keywords: more and panic). It's kinda surreal to see many stations with the price signs taken down. I wonder if the price freeze means the gas stations are also not allowed to drop their prices, seeing their competitors across the street who were selling gas at a dollar less than them when the freeze was instituted...

Anyways, to sum up, I'm riding my bike to and from work now, at least till it gets too cold or hot to do so (or I get hit).
